INTRODUCTION
“Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee”. (Psalm 2:7; Hebrews 1:5). The joy of Christmas should inspire thanksgiving and hope in God’s faithfulness, as He gifted humanity with the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ, for our deliverance from the evil of this world.
God created Adam and gave him dominion over the earth. Through Adam’s disobedience, that dominion was lost, and humanity fell into sin and evil (Genesis 2:8; 3:17–19). Finding no perfect man through whom the world could be redeemed, God, in His great love, sent His own Son, Jesus Christ, born of the virgin Mary.
1. GOD SEEKS OUT A ‘MAN’ OF GOD
Having entrusted the world to humanity through Adam, God would not contradict His word. So, He sought a man through whom He would redeem the world from evil. God therefore desired a man who believed and obeyed Him, embodied His redemptive power, ruled with love and compassion, and revealed His grace and mercy to a wayward people. Let us examine God’s chosen through the lens of these attributes.
1.1. A FAITHFUL MAN AND PEOPLE
God called Abraham to leave all that was familiar – his father, his home, and his way of life, and go to a land He would show him, promising to make him the father of many nations through a son by Sarah. Abraham believed God, and his faith was counted as righteousness. Yet he later acted on Sarah’s counsel and had a son by Hagar instead of waiting for God’s promise. Because this was not God’s will, the Lord did not speak to Abraham for over thirteen years. (Genesis 12:1; 15:4-6; 16:1-4 &16; 17:1 &15-119).
Likewise, God chose Israel by covenant, calling them His people and giving commandments to test their obedience and deepen their devotion. But they rebelled, remained stubborn, and did not fully give their hearts to Him. As a result, God allowed them, along with their kings and priests, to be taken into exile by Assyria and Babylon. (Deuteronomy 1:26; 10:12,13; 5:29; 2 Kings 17:5-23; 1 Chronicles 9:1).
1.2. A MAN TO EMBODY GOD’S REDEMPTIVE POWER
God sought a man who would embody His spiritual power to redeem his brethren. He ordained this purpose through the offices of the priesthood and the prophets. (Exodus 7:1; 4:16).
God appointed Moses to deliver Israel from bondage in Egypt and ordained Aaron as high priest to offer gifts and sacrifices for sin. Because the high priest was human, God intended him to show compassion. Yet neither Moses nor Aaron was found to be perfect before God. (Hebrews 5:1-4).
For example, when Moses was provoked by his brethren, he lost patience, and prayed for judgment, causing many to die by earthquake, fire, and plague. Likewise, Aaron, in his weakness, made the golden calf, leading Israel into idolatry and provoking God’s anger. In his fury, Moses shattered the tablets, burned the calf, and forced the people to drink its ashes. Because both men disobeyed God, they were forbidden from entering the promised land. (Numbers 16:28-33, 20:7-12; Deuteronomy 11:6; 9:7-24; 3:23-25).
1.3. A MAN TO RULE IN LOVE AND MERCY
God desired a man in kingship and leadership that will rule his people with and mercy and love. So, he anointed kings in Israel and Judah to reign over his people. However, the kings ruled by lust and oppression. For example, While King Ahab murdered Naboth to satisfy his greed for a vineyard, King David, though a man after God’s own heart, had Uriah killed to fulfil his lust for Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:3-27; 2 Samuel 27:14-17).
Thus, the prophet Ezekiel describes Israel’s corruption: prophets deceived and exploited the people, profaned what was holy, and seized what was precious; rulers were like ravenous wolves, shedding blood for gain; and the people oppressed, robbed, and abused the poor and needy. (Ezekiel 22:25-29; Jeremiah 14:14)
2. GOD SOUGHT HIS OWN ‘SON OF MAN’
Brethren, God was so disappointed with His people and with humanity that He lamented: “When I came, there was no man; when I called, none answered,” and again, “I sought for a man to stand in the gap for the land, but I found none.” (Isaiah 50:2; Ezekiel 22:30). Therefore, God sought out His own “Son of Man” to stand in the gap for mankind. “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10).
2.1. JESUS: THE MAN OF GOD’S GRACE
Jesus fulfilled His calling by becoming fully human, a merciful and faithful high priest who made atonement for the people’s sins. Through Moses came the law, but through Jesus Christ came grace and truth. He is our ‘kinsman redeemer,’ restoring us to God’s “glorious image and likeness” and making us holy and blameless in His love. (John 1:17; Ruth 4:4-10; John 1:12-13; Ephesians 1:4, 4:24
a) A FAITHFUL PARTNER
Brethren, like Abraham, Jesus left the glory and safety of heaven to obey God’s will. Unlike Abraham, He faced every temptation without faltering, faithfully keeping God’s Word and willingly laying down His life to fulfil salvation. (Hebrews 2:17; Matthew 4; John 10:17-18).
b) A RIGHTEOUS RULER
Also, unlike Israel’s kings, who often ruled with pride and injustice, Jesus led with righteousness, grace, and mercy, healing the sick, freeing the oppressed, restoring sight and hearing, proclaiming good news to the poor, and raising the dead. Scripture declares His eternal throne and righteous rule, anointed above all because He loves justice and hates wickedness. Fully human yet without sin, He understands our struggles and remains a faithful, compassionate Savior. (Matthew 11:5; Isaiah 35:5-6; Psalm 45:6-7; Hebrews 1:8, 4:15).
c) AN OBEDIENT SON
And unlike His disobedient brethren, Jesus, the ‘Man of God’s Grace,’ perfectly obeyed God’s will. He came not to abolish the law but to fulfil it. As the brightness of God’s glory, He sustained all things and became the perfect offering, accomplishing what the law could not do, binging justification to all who believe (Matthew 5:17; Hebrews 1:3; Romans 10:4).
d) A REDEEMER PRIEST
Finally, Jesus addressed the failings of the law, the prophets, and the Levitical priesthood as the perfect High Priest “after the order of Melchizedek,” offering the ultimate sacrifice for sin. Though God’s Son, He humbled Himself, obeying even to death. Through this, He was made perfect and became the source of eternal salvation for all who believe, surpassing Moses in glory. Now He sits at God’s right hand, ministering in the true heavenly sanctuary, “which the Lord pitched, not man” (Psalm 110:4; Hebrews 5:8–10, 3:3; 8:1–2; 7:11-12; Philippians 2:8; 1 Peter 3:18).
Brethren, BEHOLD YOUR LORD AND REDEEMER! Rejoice with hope in Christ, the true ‘Man of God.’ Celebrate this holiday with joy: “Go, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and share with those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy unto our Lord” (Nehemiah 8:10).
