INTRODUCTION
In Part 2 of ‘Good Courage’, we learned that ‘trust in God’ is the foundation of good courage. Trusting God enables us to endure difficult situations. As our trust in Him grows, so does our relationship with Him, and our courage becomes stronger, giving us confidence to face life’s challenges.
In this message, we will focus on the second attribute of good courage, ‘committing our way to God’. The message explores how committing our way to Him and faithfully walking in His Word enable us to live with unwavering courage and experience His faithful promises. As we commit our lives to God, we learn to trust His wisdom, submit to His will, and wait on His perfect timing.
1. COMMITTED TO TRUSTING GOD
When we face difficult situations or challenging assignments, it is not enough merely to trust in God; we must also be committed in that trust. The Scriptures declare, “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:5).
Trust is the foundation of courage, but commitment is the action that puts our trust into practice. If we truly trust Him, we will willingly commit our lives, plans, decisions, and future into His hands. We will choose to obey His Word and follow His will, even when we do not fully understand the outcome.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego demonstrated this kind of commitment. When King Nebuchadnezzar commanded them to worship the golden image, they refused to compromise their faith despite the threat of being thrown into the fiery furnace. They declared that God was able to deliver them, but even if He chose not to, they would remain faithful and worship Him alone (Daniel 3:1-6, 13-18).
Their unwavering commitment was demonstrated through their obedience and complete surrender to God’s sovereign will regardless of the outcome. Likewise, when we commit our way to the Lord, our trust deepens, our faith grows stronger, and we receive the courage to follow Him faithfully through every circumstance.
2. COMMITTING THY WAY TO GOD
Brethren, it is necessary to commit our way to God for inspiring good courage because God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways. His judgments are unsearchable, and His ways are beyond our understanding. Just as no one understands how the bones of an unborn child are formed in the womb, so no one can fully comprehend the works of God (Isaiah 55:8-9; 1 Corinthians 2:11; Romans 11:33; Ecclesiastes 11:5; Job 11:7).
Since we cannot know how God will work in our situation, what purpose He intends to accomplish, or when He will fulfil the desires of our hearts, we should not rely on our own understanding. Attempting to face life’s challenges apart from God only leads to worry, anxiety, and frustration. Instead, we should commit our way to Him, trusting that His wisdom, timing, and purposes are always perfect.
3. WAYS TO COMMIT TO GOD
There are several practical ways we demonstrate our commitment to trusting God. These include refusing to fret or do evil, resisting anger and wrath, avoiding the counsel of the ungodly and the company of the scornful, refraining from judging situations prematurely, and seeking God at all times. Let us consider each of these.
3.1. Fret Not Thyself To Do Evil
One of the clearest expressions of commitment to God is refusing to allow difficult circumstances to lead us into fear, anxiety, or sinful actions. The Psalmist exhorts us, “Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil” (Psalm 37:8).
A powerful example is found in the twelve spies sent to search the land God had promised Israel. Overwhelmed by the size of the giants, ten of the spies returned with an evil report. Their fear spread throughout the camp, causing the people to complain against God, rebel against His servants, and even seek to stone them (Numbers 13-14).
Caleb, however, committed his way to the Lord. He declared, “If the LORD delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us… Only rebel not ye against the LORD” (Numbers 14:6-9, 24). While others focused on the obstacles, Caleb trusted God’s promise.
Likewise, when we face uncertainty, we must guard against fear, anxiety, and the temptation to act outside God’s will. Instead, we are instructed: “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6-7). As we bring every concern to God in prayer, He replaces our anxiety with His peace and strengthens us to remain faithful.
3.2. Resist Anger And Wrath
Another way we demonstrate our commitment to God is by ceasing from anger and forsaking wrath (Psalm 37:8). When circumstances do not unfold according to our plans or expectations, we can easily become frustrated, angry, and resentful. Such emotions often lead to blame, accusations, and bitterness, robbing us of the peace and courage that come from trusting God.
Rather than allowing anxiety and disappointment to control us, we are called to cast every burden upon the Lord, for He cares for us and will sustain us (Psalm 55:22; 1 Peter 5:7).
We should also remember that nothing happens apart from God’s sovereign will. As the Scriptures declare, “Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?” (Lamentations 3:37). God alone has the final authority over all events. Therefore, even when life does not unfold according to our own plans, we can remain calm, trust His perfect wisdom, and continue to walk in obedience to His Word.
As we surrender our disappointments to God instead of yielding to anger, He strengthens our faith, guards our hearts, and gives us the courage to persevere.
3.3. Avoid Ungodly Counsel And The Scornful
Another way we may show our commitment to God and cultivate good courage is by avoiding ungodly counsel and the company of the scornful. The blessed person does not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor sit in the seat of the scornful (Psalm 1:1).
The scornful are those who proudly mock God and His truth, reject correction, despise wisdom, and ridicule those who seek to live righteously. They encourage others to disregard God’s ways, and their influence breeds contention, strife, and discouragement rather than faith and courage.
Therefore, we must be discerning about the voices we listen to and the company we keep. As the Scripture declares, “Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea strife and reproach shall cease” (Proverbs 22:10). By surrounding ourselves with godly influences and heeding wise counsel, we strengthen our trust in God and develop the courage to remain steadfast in His ways.
3.4. Judge No Situation Prematurely
We may also show our commitment to God by resisting the urge to judge situations, people, or their motives prematurely. Human nature desires to understand, explain, and control everything according to our own perspective. And when events do not unfold as we expect, we are often tempted to make hasty judgments based on limited knowledge. Such attitudes can lead to misunderstanding and reliance on our own wisdom rather than on God.
Instead, we should leave the final judgment to the Lord, who alone knows the whole truth. As the Scriptures teach, “Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness… ” (1 Corinthians 4:5; Proverbs 3:5-6). God alone sees every motive and will judge each person with perfect justice.
Therefore, submit yourselves to God and resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7). As we humble ourselves before the Lord and trust His perfect knowledge and timing, He guards our hearts from suspicion and gives us the courage to wait for His righteous judgment.
3.5. Seek GOD In All Things
A final way we could prove our commitment to God for good courage is by seeking Him in all things. In times of uncertainty, difficulty, or affliction, our first response should be to turn to God. Like Job, we should be able to say, “I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause” (Job 5:8; Psalm 27:4).
The Scriptures also remind us that “He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). Diligently seeking God strengthens our trust and deepens our commitment to Him. It speaks also to our willingness to receive His guidance, submit to His direction, and embrace His purpose for our lives.
King Jehoshaphat provides a powerful example. When he learned that three nations were coming to attack Judah, he ‘set himself to seek the Lord’, and proclaimed a fast in all Judah to seek God’s help. In response, God declared, “Be not afraid nor dismayed… for the battle is not yours, but God’s… Ye shall not need to fight in this battle… for the LORD will be with you” (2 Chronicles 20:1- 4; 20:15 -17).
Trusting God’s word, the people commenced praise and worship. As they praised the Lord, God set ambushes against their enemies, causing them to destroy one another and giving Judah a complete victory (2 Chronicles 20:22-24).
Brethren, no threat, adversary, or affliction is greater than our God. Whatever we face, when we commit our way to Him and diligently seek His face, He grants us wisdom, strengthens our hearts, and gives us the courage to trust His perfect plan and timing.
4. THE REWARD OF COMMITMENT
The Scriptures assure us that God is “a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). God always responds to sincere faith and delights in rewarding those who trust Him wholeheartedly and persevere in seeking Him.
The Bible gives us precious promises of reward when we commit our way unto God with all our heart namely: He shall bring our desires to pass; He shall establish our thoughts; He shall direct our paths; and we shall decree a thing, and it shall be established unto us (Psalm 37:5; Proverbs 3:5-6; 16:3; Job 22:28; 1 John 5:14–15).
Brethren, let us therefore rest in the confidence that as we commit our way to God and seek His will, He hears our prayers and answers according to His perfect purpose. Therefore, let us commit our way to the Lord without fear or hesitation.
As we trust Him, obey His Word, and patiently wait upon Him, He will establish our path, strengthen our hearts, and give us the good courage to overcome every challenge and fulfil His purpose for our lives.
PRAYER
Almighty Father, we thank Thee for Thy holy Word.
We praise Thee, O Lord, for Thou art righteous in all Thy ways and holy in all Thy works.
Gracious Father, help Thy people to willingly commit their lives, plans, and decisions into Thy faithful and capable hands. Grant them the grace to seek Thee faithfully and diligently. Hear their prayers, behold their tears, comfort every troubled heart, and heal every infirmity.
Holy Father, cause them to believe in the righteousness that is through Christ Jesus and to trust in Thy saving power.
Lead them by Thy Spirit into all truth, teach them the way that Thou wouldest have them go, and grant them peace, wisdom, and good courage in every circumstance.
May they walk steadfastly in faith, rest confidently in Thy promises, and rejoice in the assurance that Thou wilt never leave nor forsake them.
We ask all these things in the precious name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
